Are smartphones losing popularity or are people buying less because the models of recent years last longer over time? Perhaps neither of the two hypotheses, because the Covid-19 pandemic has succeeded in upsetting the mobile phone market right from the start. The latest research conducted by Digitimes Research gives us an idea of the numbers recorded by the telephony market throughout 2020 and highlights one flexion of the market compared to last year.
During the 2020, smartphone shipments fell by 8,8% compared to 2019: the total number of units shipped amounts to 1,24 billion. The main cause of this decline is of course the coronavirus pandemic, with supply and demand going into sharp decline during the first quarter of 2020. In fact, in Q1, shipments dropped by 20% compared to the same quarter of the previous year. .
The top 5 of manufacturers remained stationary: Samsung managed to remain the leaders, followed by Apple and Huawei. In fourth and fifth place they remain steadfast Xiaomi and OPPO, while immediately after there is Vivo, also belonging to the BBK Electronics group as OPPO. Among these, only Apple and Xiaomi have managed to grow, with shipments increased by 10%. The numbers are encouraging only when it comes to smartphones 5G, with 280-300 million units shipped in 2020 compared to just 20 million in 2019.
China has managed to recover very quickly from the effects of the pandemic despite initially being its epicenter, so for 2021 a strong growth of Chinese producers is expected, which should have the clearest road.
